ABSTRACT

Waste pickers, who work with the collection of recyclable materials in search of a source of income, are subject to various risks and diseases that are very well researched. The aim of this systematic review was therefore to identify and analyze the results of epidemiological research on waste pickers over the last 20 years as well as to investigate the geographical distribution and quality of these studies. The studies were selected from the literature by creating search keys with representative keywords in different databases. This systematic review exceptionally includes research qualified according to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. In total, 61 epidemiological studies with waste pickers were found in 15 different countries, with the largest number of studies carried out in the American continent compared to the African and Asian, respectively. Regarding the quality, 91.80 % were classified as excellent and 8.20 % as good. Although the results show a significant number of epidemiological studies with waste pickers, demonstrating scientific evidence, that there is still a lack of research focusing on waste pickers in different work scenarios, from different health perspectives and in different parts of the world, and it is not possible to highlight the trends in health research for this profession.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: to estimate excess deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic in the state of Santa Catarina and its macro-regions, Brazil, 2020-2021. METHODS: this was an ecological study, using data from the Mortality Information System; excess deaths in adults were calculated by the difference between the observed number of deaths and expected number of deaths, taking into account the average of deaths that occurred between 2015 and 2019; the variables "macro-region of residence", "quarter", "month", "sex" and "age group" were analyzed; data were analyzed in a descriptive manner. RESULTS: a total of 6,315 excess deaths in 2020 and 17,391 in 2021, mostly in males (57.4%) and those aged 60 years and older (74.0%); macro-regions and periods with the greatest excess deaths were those in which there were most deaths due to COVID-19; the greatest excess deaths occurred in March 2021 (n = 4,207), with a progressive decrease until the end of the year. CONCLUSION: there were excess deaths in the state of Santa Catarina and in all its macro-regions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

This case study examined the feasibility, reach, and potential impact of using Wikipedia as a tool for hearing health promotion. Activities involved editing existing Portuguese-language Wikipedia hearing health articles, as well as translating English-language hearing health articles to Portuguese during the Wiki4WorldHearingDay2019 and Wiki4YearOfSound2020 online campaigns. The Wikipedia efforts that took place in Brazil were carried out by 10 volunteer undergraduate students in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Brazil. Among new and existing Wikipedia articles, the group edited 37 articles, which attracted more than 220,000 views during the set tracking period. Students were responsible for 60% of the Portuguese-language edits during the Wiki4WorldHearingDay2019 campaign and more than 90% of the Portuguese-language edits during the first half of the Wiki4YearOfSound2020 campaign. Moreover, the quality indexes for pages either created or edited were improved in all situations by registering an increase rate ranging from 33% to 100%. Wikipedia-centered activities expanded the availability of quality scientific content, written in plain language, to the public. Students worked together in order to select topics, assess existing information, validate it, create new content, and share information-steps that contributed to the mission of health promotion and knowledge dissemination for the benefit of society.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence and time trend of typical work accidents in the textile and clothing industry in Santa Catarina from 2008 to 2017. METHODS: This was a retrospective epidemiological study based on data from the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS). The time trend was analyzed by calculating the average annual change and logistic regression. RESULTS: There was a downward trend in the incidence of occupational accidents in Santa Catarina during the period studied (8.8%). The highest incidence occurred in 2008 among men (12.6%), workers aged between 40 and 49 years (6.7%), black people (7.4%), people with less than 12 years of education (5.0%), with an average income of 3 to 7 minimum wages (7.0%), with up to 4 years of employment (6.9%), workers in the manufacture of textile products (10, 3%), medium-sized establishments (that is, between 100 and 499 workers; 7.9%) and in the regions of Greater Florianópolis (7.0%) and Vale do Itajaí (6.8%). CONCLUSIONS: The risk for typical occupational accidents dropped significantly over the period studied. However, future studies are needed to analyze new relationships that may point to other associated factors. It is hoped that this study can contribute to support measures for the prevention, promotion, protection and rehabilitation of the health of workers in this production sector.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: to analyze the temporal trend of mortality due to occupational accidents (OA) in Brazil from 2006 to 2015 and investigate inequalities related to gender, race/skin color, age group, education level, and macro-regions. Methods: ecological time series study conducted with data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Data were analyzed by Poisson regressions. Result: the average annual rate (AAR) for deaths due to OA remained relatively stable over the analyzed period (annual variation of up to 5%), but some groups and regions showed an upward trend. Mortality was significantly higher among women over 60 years old from the Midwest region (AAR: 1.21-95%CI: 1.03-1.42) and brown-skinned people from all regions (AAR: 1.03-95%CI: 1.02-1.04). In 2015, mortality from OA in the Northeast region was 88% higher among brown-skinned people (2.45/100,000) than among white people (1.30/100,000). In Brazil, mortality was 15 times higher among individuals with less than eight school years when compared to those with 12 school years or more (4.74/100,000 vs. 0.31/100,000). Conclusions: although stable, the mortality rate due to OA in Brazil is elevated when compared to high-income countries. These rates are even higher among some population groups (men, Blacks, brown-skinned, indigenous, and lower-educated people) and in certain regions of the country (North, Northeast, and Midwest).

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

As análises univariadas incluíram frequências relativas e absolutas, utilizando o teste do Qui-Quadrado, teste do qui-quadrado para tendência e o Fisher Exact.

This study estimated the prevalence of Mental and Behavioral Disorders (MBD) in military police for the License for Health Care (LHC) in the metropolitan region of Florianópolis/SC, cases registered by the Police Medical Board. For this study, the dependent variable was MBD and categorized as yes or no. Independent variables refer to demographic characteristics (gender, age) and occupational (service time, as battalion, graduation/post and hierarchy). The univariate analysis included absolute and relative frequencies, the chi-square test, the chi-square test for trends, and Fisher's Exact. To investigate the association of MBD with the individual characteristics, multivariate and hierarchical logistic models were created. Associations between the dependent variables and each of the independent variables through the Pearson chi-square test (χ2) were investigated. The model included sex and hierarchy. The analysis found the prevalence of Mental and Behavioral Disorders to be 24% and positive association factor between MBD and hierarchy. The results indicate a high prevalence of sick leave treatment for MBD and additional data which suggest that more specific studies are needed to support prevention strategies and coping of MBD, to preserve and improve the psychological health of this profession.

The results indicate a high prevalence of sick leave treatment for MBD and additional data which suggest that more specific studies are needed to support prevention strategies and coping of MBD, to preserve and improve the psychological health of this profession.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to discuss the role of ergonomics in design process using the dialogue developed by designers, implementers and users in an oil refinery. It was possible to identify the need of minimizing the postural constraints, risk of accidents, mechanical shocks and to enlarge safety perception in the access and permanency of the users at the workspace. It has been determined and validated by workers and managers to implement different deadlines depending on programming, viability and execution time for the improvements proposed. In a long-term: it was proposed the substitution of the ladders with time planning according to the maintenance program of the tanks; in a short-time: it was suggested the expansion of the existing platforms, implementation of a walkway connection provided with guardrails between the upper access of the side ladder and the repositioning of radar set and aerial aiming at the usage by workers at the workstation of the new platform. It was also elaborated eight typologies of intervention, according to the request, type of tank, material stored, and its setting place. The design process arises from ergonomics workplace analysis that presents concepts for solutions which was a mediator tool to be settled between users and implementers.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate factors associated with reported work-related musculoskeletal symptoms among aircraft assembly workers. Population consisted of 552 (491 men/61 women) workers who performed tasks related to the work of aircraft assembly. Participants completed a comprehensive questionnaire, including socio-demographic information, habits/lifestyles, working conditions, and work organization. Workers also answered the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire to obtain data on musculoskeletal symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to analyze factors associated with musculoskeletal reported symptoms. Results showed that body regions with the highest prevalence of reported musculoskeletal symptoms were similar when referred the past twelve months and the past seven days. Significant factors associated with musculoskeletal symptoms included variables related to conflicts at work, sleep problems, mental fatigue, and lack of time for personal care and recovery. Working time in the industry was associated only with reports for the last seven days and regular physical activity off-work seems to be a positive factor in preventing musculoskeletal symptoms for the past twelve months. The results highlight the multi-factorial nature of the problem. Actions to prevent musculoskeletal diseases at the aircraft assembly work should consider multiple interventions that would promote better recovery between work shifts.
